Electrical Property Testing of Materials — 5 Tests | Kiyo R&D

Electrical Property Testing — Materials Testing at Kiyo R&D Lab

Will your insulating material actually insulate — and can you prove it? For plastics, rubber, coatings, and electronic components, electrical behaviour decides whether a part is safe, compliant, and fit for use. electrical property testing measures how a material resists current, withstands voltage, and behaves in an electric field. Kiyo R&D Lab tests the electrical properties of your materials to recognised standards, with accurate data and clear reporting.

From insulators and cables to plastics, elastomers, and coatings, our expert team delivers accurate electrical data, supporting analysis, and clear, audit-ready reports you can rely on.

Why It Matters

Insulating materials fail quietly — a slightly conductive plastic or a coating that breaks down under voltage may pass a visual check yet cause a short, a shock, or a field failure later. electrical property testing makes those hidden properties visible, confirming a material resists current and withstands the voltages it will meet in service.

For manufacturers and designers it guides material choice and proves compliance; for QC teams it verifies incoming material; for failure work it explains why an insulator broke down. In every case it turns an assumption about safety into documented evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is electrical property testing?
It is the measurement of how a material behaves electrically — how well it resists current (resistivity), withstands voltage before breaking down (dielectric strength), stores charge (dielectric constant), and resists surface arcing. Together these confirm an insulating material is safe and fit for use.
What is the difference between resistivity and dielectric strength?
Resistivity measures how strongly a material resists a steady current; dielectric strength measures the voltage at which the material breaks down and lets current through. One describes normal insulating behaviour, the other the failure point — both matter for insulators.
Which materials can you test?
Plastics, rubber, coatings, films, laminates, and other insulating and dielectric materials. Tests generally need flat specimens such as sheets or plaques; tell us your material and thickness and we’ll confirm suitability.
Does humidity affect electrical properties?
Yes — moisture can significantly lower resistivity, especially surface resistivity. That is why specimens are often conditioned at a set temperature and humidity before testing, and why we can test before and after conditioning if your specification requires it.
Which standards do you follow?
Recognised methods including ASTM D257 (resistivity), D149 (dielectric strength), D150 (permittivity), D495 (arc resistance), and IEC 62631. We test to whichever your specification names — our electrical property testing is built around these standards.
