FTIR Material Identification & Unknown Analysis | Kiyo R&D Lab

FTIR Identification Testing — Analytical Testing at Kiyo R&D Lab

What is this material, and is it what it should be? When you need to put a name to an unknown polymer, additive, coating, or contaminant, ftir identification testing is the fastest reliable answer. It reads a material’s infrared fingerprint and matches it against reference spectra, turning an unknown into a confirmed identity. Kiyo R&D Lab uses FTIR to identify your materials accurately and report clearly.

From plastics and rubber to adhesives, coatings, and mystery residues, our expert team delivers accurate identification, supporting interpretation, and clear, audit-ready reports you can rely on.

How FTIR Identifies Materials

Every organic material absorbs infrared light in a pattern set by its chemical bonds — a spectrum that acts like a fingerprint. ftir identification testing records that spectrum and compares it against reference libraries to name the material. A strong match confirms identity; a partial match points to the closest family or reveals a blend or contaminant.

Because the technique is fast, needs only a tiny sample, and is highly specific for organic materials, it is the first tool most analysts reach for when the question is simply: what is this?

Who Uses This Service

  • Manufacturers: Incoming material & contamination ID — a core use of ftir identification testing.
  • Procurement: Verifying a supplier’s material claim.
  • QC & Failure Analysis: Naming defects & residues.
  • R&D & Students: Identifying unknown materials.

Standards & Related Tests

Our ftir identification testing follows recognised methods, and pairs naturally with other analytical techniques when identity alone is not enough.

ASTM ISO

Method / TestRole
ASTM E1252General FTIR practice
ISO 4650Rubber identification by IR
TGAAdds filler & composition
SEM-EDXAdds elemental analysis (inorganics)
DSCConfirms by thermal behaviour

FTIR identifies organic materials; for inorganic particles or fillers we add SEM-EDX, and for a fuller profile we combine it with TGA or DSC — ask for a complete identification package.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ftir identification testing?
It is the use of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to identify a material from its infrared fingerprint. The sample’s spectrum is compared against reference libraries to name the polymer, additive, coating, or contaminant — answering the question “what is this?”.
What can FTIR identify, and what can’t it?
FTIR is excellent for organic materials — polymers, rubbers, coatings, adhesives, and organic contaminants. It is less suited to purely inorganic materials like metals or many minerals; for those we add SEM-EDX for elemental analysis. Often the two are combined.
How much sample do you need?
Very little — a small piece, scraping, film, or a trace of residue is usually enough for ftir identification testing. Tell us what you have and we’ll confirm whether it’s suitable and how to send it.
Can you identify a blend or a contaminated sample?
Often, yes — a spectrum from a blend shows features of each component, and a contaminant can be isolated and identified separately. Complex mixtures may need supporting techniques, which we can add for a fuller answer.
Is FTIR the same as material identification?
FTIR is the main technique for identifying organic materials, but full material identification can combine it with TGA, DSC, or SEM-EDX to confirm composition, filler, and elements. FTIR answers “what polymer”, the others add “what else is in it”.
